I was sitting on the finished porch of the new house, a beer in my hand when I heard footsteps, thudding toward me.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” Josh Mercer yelled.

“What the fuck is wrong with me?” I scoffed at the fucking asshole.

“Do you not get what you just did to her?”

“What I did?” I stood up and got in his face.

“I know what you did. You think people don’t tell me shit? You’ve been doing the renovation on her shop. I had to pretend like I knew nothing about it. I also had to pretend I didn’t know you got that chair she loves so much. How long have you been in love with my ex?” he demanded.

“I didn’t say I was in love with her,” I argued. Not because it wasn’t true. I said it because I was pissed.

“Well, you are. You wouldn’t have pulled that protective macho bullshit the night before the wedding if you didn’t have feelings for her. You walked away from a lot of money, Cam. You don’t do that because your boss is cheating on his fiancé.”

He was right. The fucking asshole.

“So, tell me, you self-righteous prick. With everything you’ve done for her, why would go out of your way to hurt someone who already had trust issues to begin with and recently had her heart broken? You didn’t even give her a fuckin’ chance. Why the fuck would you do that?”

I stepped away from him and walked into the house. There was shit everywhere. Tarps, sawhorses, cords, buckets of plaster and paint. Josh followed me in but stopped in the entryway.

“How did you find this place?” he asked as he looked around.

“A friend, Nico. He owns the tattoo shop?”

“I’ve heard of him.”

“He knows a guy on the city council who bought whatever he could in this part of Laguna, wanted to save it from developers. I told Nico I was looking for a new place and … Fuck you, why am I telling you this?”

“Because I did not sleep with Tori. I held her, we talked, we fell asleep. We said goodbye.”

“Fuck,” I shook my head. “Seriously?”

“Why would I lie to you? I know what you went through, Cam. And I’m with the person I should have been with all along. I wouldn’t do anything to fuck that up.”

I sat on the bottom step that led upstairs. “Fuck, I fucked up.”

“Yeah, but she’s sweet and stronger than she thinks. She’ll forgive you. Fix it and listen to what she says. I never listened because I was torn in half.”

I looked into the living room where the wooden fireplace had just been installed. Josh’s eyes followed. “This is everything she wanted that I never gave her. She wanted a home. I gave her … I gave her nothing but disappointment, Cam. Fix it,” he said before he walked out the door.
